Produce Storage: some like personal space!
Produce Storage: some like personal space!
Determining whether to store your produce in or out of the fridge is only half of the battle - the other factor you have to consider is whether you can keep specific fruits and veggies together or if you should separate them.
Do you keep your vegetables in one area of the fridge and your fruit in another area? I did that for years! Did you know, though, that as a rule of thumb, you should keep apples, avocados, stone fruits, pears, bananas, and tomatoes away from other fruits and veggies, especially leafy greens? Why is this? The ethylene gas that these fruits and veggies release can speed up the ripening process into hyperdrive.
The following are gas producers and include Apricots, Apples, Avocados, Bananas (unripe), Cantaloupe, Figs, Honeydew, Kiwi, Nectarines, Peaches, Plums, Tomatoes.
These are the gas sensitive fruits and veggies, and they include Bananas (ripe), Broccoli, Brussels Sprouts, Cabbage, Carrots, Cauliflower, Cucumbers, Eggplant, Lettuce, Peas, Peppers, Squash, Sweet Potatoes, Watermelon.
I hope you have enjoyed this information. Until next time!
